Throughout the day we may be exhausted and ready for bed, but by the time bed time hits we’re wide awake and then we think of how exhausted we’re going to be the next day if we don’t get sleep and then that anxiety keeps us up. Wow, that is tiring! Here are some tips to get a better night’s sleep and feel rested the next day:

Make a sleep schedule and stick to it. If you go to bed at 9 o’clock one day and midnight the next, your body is going to be confused so pick a time and stick to it, even on weekends and holidays. If you are still awake for 15 minutes after you go to bed, get up and do something relaxing and go back to bed when you’re tired.

Keep an eye on what you eat and drink. Do not go to bed hungry or stuffed, also limit your beverage intake before bed so there are less sleep interruptions to the toilet. Nicotine, caffeine, and alcohol can disturb your sleep as well so use caution when using these.

Try to manage your stress. You can do this by getting organized and prioritizing. Right before bed write what is on your mind and set it aside for tomorrow so you have a clear mind.

Include physical activity in your daily routine, but don’t exercise right before bed. This will help you fall asleep and get a deeper sleep.

Create a bedtime ritual. This will help your body wind down from the stress of the day. Activities you might think about doing are reading a book, taking a warm bath, listening to soothing music, etc.

Life can be very stressful for many folks right now, but it is important to get good night’s sleep for your health as well as your mood. Best of all it will make you look stunning; after all, everyone needs their beauty sleep.

Tuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by a bacterial microorganism that can affect almost any part of the body. There are two different ways you can get tested for Tuberculosis, a skin test or a blood test. The Mantoux tuberculin skin test is executed by inserting a small amount of tuberculin fluid into the lower part of the arm. Forty-eight to seventy-two hours after the injection you must return to the health care worker and they will look for a reaction on your arm. The tuberculosis blood test is performed like any other blood test and tests how your immune system reacts to the bacteria that cause Tuberculosis. Results for this test are available within 24-48. If you are positive for TB, there will be further tests that your doctor will discuss with you.

Since Tuberculosis is such a serious disease, and seeing as one-third of the world is infected with it, it is very important to get tested, especially if you are a staff member at an adult care facility. This is so important in your adult carefacility because senior’s immune systems are down so it is easy for you to pass TB on to them or for them to pass it to you. Remember, in most cases this is a life threatening disease, so get checked.

Ahh! Not much is nicer then snuggling up in a nice cozy blanket except for if it’s a nice cozy dog instead. An up and coming idea for assisted living facilities is to hold a pet day where volunteers can bring in certified therapy pets. Before the residents came into your facility, almost all of them had pets and had great memories with them, so why not hold an event to bring back old memories and make new ones.

Along with the great interaction, this is also considered a form of therapy. Just petting a guinea pig or having a cat lay on your lap is extremely therapeutic because it releases endorphins. This event would be such a hit that even the more reserved residents may come out of their rooms to enjoy some animal time.

We all know that when the weather starts to chill, let’s face it, so do our bodies and exercising is not on the top of our priority lists. Snuggling up in a blanket with a cup of hot chocolate sounds like a better option, but it is very important to get your exercise in and keep eating healthy, so here are a few tips to exercising in cold weather:

Layer your clothes. This allows you to take off articles of clothing when your body temperature rises, that way you don’t get chills from sweating early on.

Wear the appropriate foot gear for snow and ice. You can purchase steel coils and rubber attachments that go onto your regular sneaker in a snap.

Stay hydrated! Just because its cold out doesn’t mean that you don’t have to drink water during a workout, you need just as much water as you do in the summer because you will still be sweating.

Skin and sun protection, such as sunglasses and sunscreen are important to wear in the winter too because the sun reflects from the snow and the roads and can cause your skin to burn.

Wear your reflective gear so that people in cars can see you. It can be a little harder to see in the cold weather because it could be overcast, snowing, or someone’s just not paying attention; so make sure that you’re doing your part of staying safe.

Be sure to use these tips and all of the other great tips about working out. You can never be too safe so remember to stay warm but wear layers, wear the proper shoe attachments, drink your water, don’t catch too many rays, and wear your reflective gear and you’ll be on your way to a healthy winter season.

In life not all endings have to be thought of in a negative light, but as a window to new opportunity. In the work place contracts are terminated, employees leave or are asked to leave, and outside providers may be let go as their services are no longer required. We are often blinded by our unrealistic optimism thinking everything will work out the way we want, but we need to remember to plan for success but also consider failure.

When dealing with contracts, always include an escape clause even if you are positive your partner or employee won’t leave you hanging. When dealing with employees that decide to move on to a new job, there are a few steps to ensure that they have a happy ending in your work environment. These steps include:

Thank them graciously

Discuss how other employees should be notified of the leave

Explain how their role may change until their last day. Employees that are being terminated, no matter the reason, still deserve to be treated with kindness. Kind mannerisms for the client that is fired involve: thanking them, make sure all legal files are clear for termination, and provide a stress-free environment for their leave. Out-sourced business partners may need to be let go as the business grows or relocates. To show your appreciation to them, be thankful, ask them to help with the transition, allow enough notice according to the contract, ask them for feedback, and provide a reference if appropriate.

One hobby that manyenjoy is music. There are many different styles and tempos of music, but when working with residents at an assisted living facility, it is better to mind an era that they will enjoy. Whether it be jazz, classical, doo wop, or blues, music is a sure crowd pleaser and would get most of the residents out of there rooms.

Since music is such a hit, why not hold a musical event for your home. Some of your residents might play a musical instrument so they may like to perform. It could be a musical talent show night for the residents! Ask for musical volunteers and provide some light & healthy snacks for those watching the show to enjoy. The rest comes naturally, just sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.

Every New Year comes with some great things, great food, great people, and great parties, but there is one thing that most people dread, the New Year’s resolution. Right about now, is the time when many of us (myself included) start to stray from what we committed ourselves to on January 1st. The range of resolutions is very broad, some people want to lose weight, others want to climb Mount Everest, but while you’re on your journey, here are a few tips to keep you aligned for a successful new year’s resolution:

Be realistic. If you have not worked out in 10 years and you want to start going to the gym every day of the week, that’s not very realistic at first, you need to wean yourself into it or get a personal trainer to help you through it.

Make a plan and outline it. Don’t come up with your resolution on New Year’s Eve; plan it out well ahead of time so that you have time to come up with an outline for your resolution.

Reward yourself for making this major change in your life. This does not mean go indulge in a carton of ice-cream, as a substitute reward yourself with something you enjoy that does not object to your resolution.

Track your progress but don’t beat yourself up. Every success, big or small, is still a success so make sure that you track that and don’t beat yourself up for the small successes.

Most important, STICK TO IT! Studies show that it takes about 21 days to get in the habit of something, so stick with it and eventually it will come naturally.

So now that you know how to stick to your resolution I hope to see some great changes this year. Remember RPRTS, realistic, plan, reward, track, and stick to it and you’re resolution will be a winner!

There are seven basic lawsuit stages that occur regardless of the level of the offense.

Stage One: Filing the court papers. In this stage either you or better yet, your attorney submit pleadings that summarize how the law has been broken.

Stage Two: A jury of your peers is selected to hear your case.

Stage Three: is the opening statement(s). The opening statement is presented by the attorney and includes why you have a sound case, how he would like to see it resolved, and the information that will presented during the trial.

Stages Four and Five are where the majority of information is brought to light. You have the witness and expert cross-examination and testimony. You also have the closing arguments in which the attorney will once more review the facts. In the last two stages of the trail you will have the jury instruction and the verdict. The jury will be instructed to meet in another room to decide who will win the case. The jury’s decision is presented to the judge, but the judge has the final say in the verdict and punishment to be awarded.

How much printing does your Assisted Living Facility do each month? Did you know that printing and paper costs are quick to add up. But there is hope in saving money on paper. Here are three ways to save your Assisted Living Facility money this month:

1. Wait for it to go on sale at Staples- many times throughout the year, Staples offers an easy rebate when purchasing reams of paper. What is an easy rebate? Its a rebate form you fill out online and many times they will reimburse you the full cost.

2. Buy directly from the paper mill- we have a local printing company that allows us to buy boxes of colored paper through them directly from the mill. This alone has cut our paper expense by 20%!
